Large and Small Magellanic Clouds

The Large Magellanic Cloud together with its neighbour the Small Magellanic Cloud are conspicuous objects in the southern sky, looking like separated pieces of the Milky Way. Certainly know since ancient times it was Ferdinand Magellan's voyage of 1519 - 1522 that brought knowlegde of them to Europeans. Both are irregular dwarf galaxies and are members of the Local group of galaxies. Supernova 1987A ocurred in the Large Magellanic Cloud on February 25 1987.
